Kuhusu

Endowed in the name of Sharifa Hammoud al Dabbous, the mother of Essam Salman al Dabbous, may God have mercy on her, this mosque in al Khafji within the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia continues the Gulf tradition of honouring mothers and beloved family members through perpetual charitable endowments whose benefit flows to the wider community in every daily prayer and weekly congregational gathering. Al Khafji sits at the northern end of the Saudi Gulf coast along the Kuwait border, a town whose modest population sustains itself through oil sector employment, fishing, and regional trade. The Al Dabbous name features among the settled Najdi family lineages whose members spread across the Arabian peninsula in commerce, public service, and religious life. Eastern Province mosque architecture blends Najdi traditional elements with Gulf coastal influences, producing mosques that feature plain rendered walls, carved wooden doors, modest domes, and square or octagonal minarets. This mosque named for Sharifa Hammoud follows regional character, its dignified exterior welcoming worshippers from surrounding streets. Inside, the carpeted prayer hall accommodates a substantial congregation across separate men's and women's sections, with a mihrab faced in carved limestone or inlaid marble, a wooden minbar, and inscriptions of Qur'anic verses running in elegant Thuluth script along the upper walls. Five daily prayers gather neighbours arriving on foot or by car, and Jumu'ah fills the hall with men of all ages. Sermons in classical Arabic address Qur'anic themes, hadith guidance, and the particular honour that Islam accords to mothers whose service and sacrifice the community remembers in such perpetual endowments. Ramadan brings communal iftar gatherings featuring Gulf specialities including machboos, harees, thareed, dates, laban, and sweet luqaimat, with the founding family often continuing to fund the daily meals across generations. Taraweeh prayers extend the evenings. Qur'anic memorisation classes for children and women produce new hafidh each year. Women worship in dedicated sections with their own entrances. Nearby attractions include the Saudi Kuwaiti partitioned zone oil heritage sites, the Gulf beaches of the northern Saudi coast, the historic city of Jubail further south, and the major petroleum centre at Dhahran.
