Kuhusu

Deep in the Atlas foothills near the town of Amizmiz in Morocco's Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz region, Timzgida n Umslan, Masjid Amsilan, carries its name in both the Amazigh Berber Tifinagh script and in the Arabic script, reflecting the enduring dual cultural heritage of the western Atlas mountains. The word timzgida is the Amazigh form of the Arabic masjid, preserved in daily speech across the Atlas for more than a thousand years. Amizmiz itself has been a market town since medieval times, standing at the edge of the Haouz plain and the mountain passes leading up toward Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa.
The surrounding Amazigh communities embraced Islam from the eighth century onward, weaving it gracefully into their ancestral rhythms of transhumance, olive pressing, saffron harvesting, and communal irrigation. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught that the most beloved people to God are those most beneficial to others, and the Atlas villagers have translated that teaching into the institution of the igourramen, the saintly scholar guardians of mosques and shrines, and the jmaa, the communal assembly that governs village affairs. A village mosque such as this one stands at the centre of that life.
Architecturally the building is unmistakably western Atlas in every detail. Earth coloured rammed walls, a low square tower topped with a small ramp platform for the muezzin, a flat cedar beam roof, and a simple courtyard shaded by fig and olive trees mark the style of the house of prayer. Inside, the floor is covered with woven palm mats and red Berber carpets bearing geometric patterns echoed on the walls and the carved wooden mihrab. The Friday khutbah is delivered in classical Arabic with explanations in the local Tashelhit tongue, and Ramadan brings collective iftars of harira, dates, msemen bread, and hot mint tea. Children gather after school to learn the Qur'an with a patient local teacher in a corner of the prayer hall. Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha appear on this page for every worshipper of Amizmiz and every traveller heading toward the soaring High Atlas peaks.
