À propos

Commissioned by the family of Hissa Abdulaziz Abdulrahman bin Saloom and dedicated to her memory alongside her parents, this mosque in the Salmiya district of Kuwait carries forward a long Kuwaiti tradition of private endowments by devout families who sought to leave a lasting sadaqah jariyah for their loved ones. Salmiya lies in the Hawalli Governorate along the Gulf coast, a cosmopolitan neighbourhood whose name is remembered from early twentieth century pearl diving records when Kuwait's livelihood depended upon the ships that sailed from Qibla Harbour each summer for the long dive season in the waters near Bahrain and the Iranian coast. Establishing a mosque in the name of a deceased parent or child is among the most treasured charitable acts in Kuwaiti society, practised by the ruling al Sabah family and by merchant households since the city was founded by the Bani Utub tribes at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) taught that whoever builds a mosque for the sake of God, God builds for him a house in paradise, and successive generations of Kuwaitis have responded to that promise with quiet generosity that filled their country with modest neighbourhood masjids. The building reflects modern Gulf architectural taste. Smooth white walls, a central dome glazed in pale turquoise, a single tapering minaret, calligraphic friezes quoting the Qur'an, and spacious ablution facilities designed for both men and women stand within the centre of the complex. Air conditioning hums gently during the intense summer months when temperatures in Kuwait City frequently exceed fifty degrees Celsius, while in the cooler winter months the doors are thrown open to the sea breeze drifting in from the Gulf. Accurate daily prayer times for this masjid in Salmiya, the address, a map, and helpful notes are presented here for Kuwaiti residents, Gulf travellers, and expatriate workers seeking a nearby place of worship during their time in the Hawalli district. Salmiya is famed for its long waterfront corniche, the Scientific Centre with its large aquarium, and the bustling Salem al Mubarak Street where shoppers gather in the cool evenings. After Maghrib, many worshippers at this mosque greet one another with traditional Kuwaiti kindness, sipping cardamom coffee and remembering the good deeds of the family whose gift made their prayers possible.
