Kuhusu

Serving the village of al Zahiriyin within Ash Shatt district in the governorate of Lahij in southern Yemen, Masjid Khaled Thawab al Utaybi welcomes worshippers from the small farming settlements that spread across the coastal plain inland from Aden. Lahij is a historic province whose sultanate once ruled a federation of villages and oases stretching between the high mountains of Yafa and the Gulf of Aden. Its fertile valleys, irrigated by seasonal wadis that swell after the rains, have produced cotton, dates, and sorghum for generations, and its towns have witnessed the quiet coming and going of traders, scholars, and soldiers across the centuries. Building a mosque in the name of an individual is a cherished Yemeni custom rooted in the teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that one of the acts whose reward continues after death is a righteous child who prays for the deceased, and a charity whose benefit endures, such as a mosque. Families and benefactors in Lahij have long followed this path, naming humble village masjids after fathers, sons, or generous contributors whose memory is thereby woven into the daily prayers of every worshipper who crosses the threshold. The building follows the practical style typical of Yemeni village mosques. Whitewashed mud brick walls, a flat roof supported by palm timbers, a short minaret, a small ablution court with a hand pumped water tank, and a modest prayer hall covered with reed mats and donated carpets welcome the farmers, herders, and schoolteachers who gather for the five daily prayers. A simple wooden minbar stands beside the mihrab, awaiting the Friday khutbah delivered in gentle classical Arabic. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Masjid Khaled Thawab al Utaybi in al Zahiriyin, along with its address, a map view, and a few practical notes for those arriving, are presented on this page for residents of Ash Shatt, travellers passing between Lahij and Aden, and visitors from other parts of Yemen. Lahij is known for its sultan's palace at al Hawtah, its traditional silverwork, and the sweet green bananas grown in its well irrigated gardens. After Maghrib, worshippers here often share glasses of strong sweet tea and plates of fresh warm bread baked by village women, wrapping each guest in the unpretentious warmth characteristic of every corner of southern Yemen.
