Kuhusu

Dedicated to Habib Taha bin Umar al Safi al Saqaf, may God have mercy on him, this mosque at At Tahalif within the Muhafazat Hadramawt of Yemen honours a respected scholar in the Hadrami Islamic tradition whose Saqaf family has produced saintly teachers and preachers across centuries of religious service. The Hadramawt valley in southern Yemen has nurtured one of the great historical centres of Muslim scholarship, its cities of Tarim, Sayun, and Shibam producing generations of scholars, preachers, poets, and traders whose migrations carried the Hadrami Islamic tradition across the Indian Ocean to East Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and as far as the Hijaz and the Red Sea coast. The Ba Alawi and Saqaf scholarly lineages have been central to this extraordinary diaspora, establishing schools, mosques, and communities in every region where Hadrami migrants settled. Yemeni mosque architecture represents one of the oldest and most distinctive traditions in the Arabian peninsula, with mud brick or stone construction, beautifully carved wooden ceilings and doors, plastered decoration of extraordinary refinement, and minarets whose tapering profiles rise above the packed mud tower houses of the valley towns. This mosque at At Tahalif follows regional character, its harmonious presence among the surrounding settlements reflecting centuries of accumulated craftsmanship. Inside, the carpeted prayer hall features a mihrab framed by traditional plasterwork and carving, a wooden minbar, and perhaps painted Qur'anic inscriptions along the upper walls. Daily prayers gather worshippers from the village and surrounding farms, and Jumu'ah fills the hall. Sermons in Hadrami Arabic with classical Qur'anic passages address religious themes and often reflect on the teachings of the Hadrami scholarly tradition. Ramadan transforms daily rhythms with communal iftar gatherings featuring Yemeni specialities including saltah, fahsa, malawah bread, and sweet bint al sahn pastries dripping with honey. Taraweeh prayers fill the evenings, and the community observes the particular devotional practices of the Hadrami tradition. Qur'anic memorisation schools produce new hafidh each year. Women worship in dedicated sections. Nearby attractions include the historic cities of Shibam with its mud brick skyscrapers, Tarim with its numerous mosques and the Al Ahgaff library, and Sayun with its former sultan's palace.
