Sobre

Rising on a gentle rise in the village of Aydun south of Irbid in northern Jordan, the Great Southern Sareeh Mosque takes the descriptive name al Sareeh al Janoubi al Kabir, denoting its prominent location at the southern edge of the historic district of al Sareeh and its status as the great jami of the local community. Irbid governorate, often called the Arous al Shamal or Bride of the North, carries a Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad heritage, and its villages nestle among olive groves and wheat fields stretching toward the Syrian border. Aydun itself, a quiet settlement, is known for its traditional basalt and limestone houses, its proud tribal hospitality, and its continuing love for classical Arabic poetry recited at family gatherings. Architecturally the mosque is built in the enduring Levantine idiom, featuring cream limestone walls, a central dome of pale green tile, twin slender minarets whose balconies overlook the surrounding farms, and a spacious courtyard shaded by cypress and palm trees. Inside, the mihrab is faced with polished marble inscribed with Quranic verse, and the prayer hall stretches beneath painted timber beams with soft carpets underfoot. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is invoked at every congregation. Daily prayers gather farmers from surrounding olive groves, teachers from Aydun's schools, and labourers returning from the nearby industrial estates. The Friday khutbah draws men from neighbouring villages, addressing themes of tribal reconciliation, integrity in business, and the primacy of family. Ramadan is luminous, with communal iftars of mansaf, maqlouba, qatayef, and sweet tamar hindi juice laid out on long rugs across the courtyard. The two Eids fill the open ground with families embracing. Travellers visiting the region can combine a stop at Aydun with the ancient Roman ruins of Umm Qais, the Yarmouk River gorge, and the vibrant markets of Irbid city nearby. Weekly tafsir circles taught by a senior scholar from Yarmouk University draw attendees from surrounding villages, and the mosque library holds classical works of Levantine Islamic scholarship. A women's prayer hall includes facilities for nursing mothers, and weekly ladies' halaqah sessions cover household fiqh and the biographies of the mothers of the believers, may God be pleased with them. Charitable programmes distribute olive oil and wheat to needy families during winter months, continuing a traditional northern Jordanian practice rooted in the deep culture of tribal generosity that defines village life across this beloved Irbid highland region here.
