Based in the municipality of Barendrecht on the southern edge of the Rotterdam Rijnmond region, Stichting Islamitisch Centrum Rotterdam IJsselmonde serves a Muslim community rooted in the industrial, maritime, and residential quarters of South Holland. Rotterdam itself is the largest port in Europe and has welcomed successive waves of Muslim migration since the 1960s, first from Morocco and Turkey, then from Suriname, Somalia, Bosnia, and the Arab world. IJsselmonde, an island ward surrounded by the Maas and Noord rivers, carries its own proud identity within the city, and its Islamic centre reflects the careful, patient work of neighbours building a place for family prayer in the Netherlands.
Stichting is the Dutch word for foundation, and the centre is governed by a board of community elders who maintain the building, arrange imam duties, and coordinate educational programmes. A house of worship that serves as both masjid and community centre follows the long tradition taught by the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whose own mosque in Madinah functioned as prayer hall, school, shelter for travellers, meeting room for the Companions, may God be pleased with them, and centre for charity. Every Dutch centre that combines prayer with lessons, advice, and hospitality quietly continues that inheritance.
The building itself is a converted community property adapted thoughtfully for Islamic use. A bright carpeted prayer hall with a simple mihrab, separate ablution facilities for men and women, a small library of Qur'anic and educational materials in Arabic, Dutch, Turkish, and English, and classrooms used for weekend madrasah, Dutch language support, and mothers' groups. A separate women's prayer area upstairs is reached by its own entrance, as is customary in many European mosques.
Muslim families from across Barendrecht, IJsselmonde, and the southern Rotterdam neighbourhoods gather here for the five daily prayers, for Jumu'ah delivered in Dutch and Arabic, and for the evening taraweeh of Ramadan. On this page visitors will find the current prayer times, address, and useful notes to help students, workers, pilgrims passing through Schiphol or the Europoort, and local residents locate the centre and share in its unhurried, neighbourly, and genuinely Dutch expression of community Islamic devotion day after day.
