Bearing the resonant name Ahl al Qur'an, the People of the Qur'an, this jami mosque in the Bawshar district of Muscat celebrates the noble status that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, reserved for those who devote themselves to the recitation, memorisation and study of the revealed book. A hadith affirms that the people of the Qur'an are the people of God and His special friends, and the congregation that has adopted this title places Qur'anic instruction squarely within the core of its programme. Bawshar itself is among the oldest inhabited districts of Muscat, spreading from the coastal plain inland towards the Hajar mountain foothills and preserving farming hamlets alongside modern residential developments. Oman's Islamic heritage is notable for the voluntary acceptance of the faith during the Prophet's own lifetime, the civilising work of the Julanda family rulers, and the centuries of scholarship cultivated in Nizwa, Rustaq and Ibri. Figures such as Ibn Baraka of Behla and the scholars of jabal al Akhdar whom God's mercy cover upon them, produced weighty works on jurisprudence, grammar and ethics. The regional architectural tradition of Oman favours rendered stone walls in pale hues, carved wooden doors, slender square minarets capped with green glazed domes, geometric stucco panels around the mihrab, and courtyards shaded by date palms. the mosque holds the five daily salat, a substantial Friday assembly whose khutbah is delivered in careful classical Arabic, tarawih throughout Ramadan often led by memorisers distinguished in international competitions, and Eid prayers followed by communal distributions of sweets and qahwa. Qur'an memorisation circles for boys and girls meet after asr prayer, and the tajwid teachers have trained many hafizes recognised locally. Travellers heading from the Grand Mosque of Muscat to the Royal Opera House or inland to the ancient capital of Nizwa will find this Bawshar jami a living example of Omani devotion to the revealed book. The khatib's annual Ramadan programme culminates in a joyful khatm al Qur'an ceremony where the entire thirty juz are completed within the final tarawih, drawing worshippers from across the Bawshar district to witness the closing verses being recited aloud.
