On the elevated plateau of Murtafaat al Ansab, within the Bawshar district of Muscat, the Omani capital whose white washed quarters cascade down to the Gulf of Oman, the Mosque of Murtafaat al Ansab takes its name from the neighbourhood itself. The word murtafaat means the heights, and al Ansab, meaning the monuments or standing stones, recalls an older landscape of rocky outcrops and cairns that once marked the edge of the coastal hills before the quiet expansion of suburban Muscat through the late twentieth century.

Oman's Islamic heritage stretches back to the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, for it was the Omanis who received the envoy Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, carrying the Prophet's letter inviting the people of Oman to Islam, and their rulers Jayfar and Abd, the sons of al Julanda, may God be pleased with them, accepted the invitation without battle. This early acceptance has given Oman a distinctive and deeply rooted Muslim identity that pervades its settlements from the interior of Jabal Akhdar to the coastal edges of Dhofar.

The building follows a familiar Omani idiom. A whitewashed rectangular prayer hall is capped by a simple central dome in cream, flanked by a slender minaret whose balcony once held the muezzin and now carries loudspeakers. A shaded arcade in pointed arches runs along the front, and a small courtyard paved with patterned tile welcomes worshippers. Carved wooden doors in Zanzibari style Omani craft are inlaid with brass studs and iron nails.

Inside, the hall is luminous and cool. Long rows of red patterned carpet, a ribbed ceiling in carved wood, and a mihrab finished in carved stucco with geometric star patterns frame the qibla direction. a hand carved mimbar of dark hardwood stands to the right of the mihrab. A curtained partition reserves a comfortable prayer space for sisters along one side.

The mosque's calendar combines the daily five prayers with weekly Friday gatherings, community iftars during Ramadan featuring Omani favourites of harees, shuwaa, and sweet halwa, and quiet memorial readings of Surah Yasin for departed neighbours, weaving a gentle and enduring pattern of Muscat devotion.
