Ibn Abbas Mosque in the Bawshar district south of Muscat commemorates the Prophet's cousin and noted Quranic commentator Abdullah ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, who is revered across the Muslim world as the ink of the Muslim community for his unmatched scholarship of the Quran. Bawshar itself is one of the historic outlying villages of Muscat, celebrated for its hot springs that have been patronised by visitors since ancient times, its date palm groves running along the wadi bed, and the looming presence of the Al Hajar mountains to the west. The mosque honours the Quranic legacy that Abdullah ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, handed down through generations of scholars, a legacy dear to Omani religious life with its long tradition of Quranic study. Architecturally the building is an elegant example of contemporary Omani mosque construction: whitewashed walls with delicate carved stucco trim, a single low dome clad in cream tile, a square minaret with lattice work around the upper balcony, and a shaded arcade running around two sides of the courtyard where frangipani flowers scent the evening air. The interior is floored in deep red carpet with traditional Omani patterns, the mihrab finished in carved white plaster inlaid with verses from Surah al Fatihah, and the minbar crafted from polished sandalwood. A separate women's section is accessible through a side entrance. The congregation draws Omani families from Bawshar's villas and farms, and long settled expatriates from the Indian subcontinent, East Africa, and the wider Arab world. Daily prayers are calm and attentive. Jumu'ah sermons are delivered in clear classical Arabic, with occasional passages in Swahili for the older generation of Zanzibari Omanis who returned home after independence. Ramadan fills the courtyard with nightly iftar tables of harees, shuwa, and Omani halwa. Eid prayer spreads onto the adjacent open ground, where families greet one another warmly in crisp dishdashas. Close by stand the Bawshar hot springs, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the National Museum on the road into Muscat, the ruined watchtowers that guard the wadi approaches to the mountains beyond, the palm groves of Qurum wadi, and the old gold souk of Muttrah along the coastal corniche.
