Tucked inside the staff quarters of a Malaysian educational institution in Buloh Kasap, Johor, the Surau Mini Kuarters Institusi Pendidikan offers teachers, administrators, and their families a quiet place to perform their daily prayers without leaving the campus. Buloh Kasap lies in the Segamat district of Johor state, a lush region of oil palm plantations, rubber estates, and winding rivers that has been home to Malay farming communities for many centuries. Johor itself traces its sultanate back to the sixteenth century, when princes from the fallen Malacca sultanate rebuilt their court on the banks of the Johor River and continued the long tradition of Malay Islamic governance. A surau in Malay custom is a smaller house of prayer designed to serve a neighbourhood, workplace, or school, distinct from the larger masjid jamek where Friday prayer is held. The tradition of building suraus inside institutions of learning traces back to the earliest pondok religious schools of the peninsula, where the act of remembering God sat at the centre of every lesson in Arabic grammar, Qur'anic recitation, and Malay literature taught by patient teachers whose influence shaped generations of students who later carried that same ethos into government, medicine, and engineering. This surau reflects the gentle simplicity of its purpose. A tiled roof sheltering a bright prayer hall, rattan screens that separate the men's and women's sections, ceiling fans turning above soft carpets woven in muted colours, and a modest mihrab painted in pale green create a setting suitable for short breaks between classes and for longer gatherings in the evening. During the nights of Ramadan, teachers and their children gather for tarawih prayers, and platters of bubur lambuk rice porridge are passed around before the call for Maghrib. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at this surau are provided on the current page, along with its address, a location map, and practical notes for visitors, parents attending school events, and teaching staff newly arrived at the institution. Johor's humid tropical climate makes the shaded walk to the surau a welcome pause during the school day, and many worshippers remain for a few minutes of personal supplication after the obligatory prayers. Students hurrying between lessons often stop simply to greet the caretaker and leave for class calmed and centred by the few quiet moments spent within its walls.
