Set within the multipurpose Gedung Serbaguna Assakinah complex in Cianjur regency in the Indonesian province of West Java, Masjid Assakinah takes its name from the Arabic word sakinah, meaning tranquillity or the deep spiritual peace that God sends down upon the hearts of the faithful. West Java is one of the most Muslim majority regions of Indonesia, home to the Sundanese people whose gentle cultural warmth and profound attachment to Islam have shaped the religious landscape of the archipelago for centuries. Cianjur itself is a highland town surrounded by tea plantations and rice terraces, known for its distinctive cuisine, its beras pandan wangi fragrant rice and its tradition of pesantren education.

The multipurpose complex to which the mosque belongs hosts weddings, community meetings, lectures and training sessions, and the masjid within it serves both regular worshippers from the surrounding district and attendees of events held on the premises. The building is a modern construction in pale cream concrete and pale green tile, topped by a modest central dome and a single minaret capped with a gilded crescent. Ablution pavilions at the side are generously proportioned, with marble benches and a constant flow of cool water from the mountain spring that supplies the complex.

Inside, the main prayer hall is a spacious rectangular room floored with polished teak wood overlaid by carpets in a soothing sea green. The mihrab is finished in white marble with a calligraphic inscription of Surat al Fath calling for the descent of sakinah upon the believers' hearts, and a wooden minbar of Javanese jati wood stands beside it, carved with gentle floral arabesques in the Sundanese style. Ceiling fans rotate slowly above the rows, stirring the humid tropical air. A separate women's section on the upper mezzanine is reached by a dedicated staircase and offers its own ablution facilities.

The congregation is a lively mixture of local Cianjur residents, students from a nearby pesantren, civil servants from the district offices and travellers who stop during weddings and community programmes. Friday sermons are delivered in Sundanese with classical Arabic quotations from the Quran and Prophetic hadith. Ramadan transforms the complex into a daily iftar venue, with long tables laid out for rice, fried chicken, sayur asem, krupuk and sweet kolak bananas served from the complex kitchen. Travellers driving between Jakarta and Bandung who pause in Cianjur are welcomed warmly here and invited to share a meal and a moment of true sakinah in the highland cool.
