Fatikchari, an upazila of Chittagong district in southeastern Bangladesh, spreads across wooded hills and small rivers between the port city of Chittagong and the forested borderlands of the Hill Tracts, and this village jami masjid bears the name of Alhaj Chand Meah Hafez, a local benefactor whose endowment and hifz of the Qur'an earned him enduring community respect. The title alhaj indicates the completion of the pilgrimage to Mecca, while hafez names one who has memorised the Qur'an in full, and combining both honours reflects the deep esteem in which the donor was held. Chittagong's Islamic heritage is ancient and continuous, tied to the arrival of Arab, Persian and Yemeni traders on the Bay of Bengal shore as early as the ninth century, to the saint Bayazid Bostami of Nasirabad whose shrine still draws pilgrims and to the scholarly families of Hathazari whose madrasas shaped generations. Architecturally the Fatikchari masjid follows the Bengali village jami style, combining a plastered brick hall with three ribbed domes above the qibla wall, a single minaret and a long verandah shaded by a zinc roof against the monsoon rains. Inside, ceiling fans turn slowly above pale green tiled floors, the mihrab is framed by calligraphic ceramic and the mimbar is carved from mahogany in traditional Bengali style. Five daily prayers are observed with the adhan carried by loudspeaker across the hills, Jumu'ah draws worshippers from the surrounding hamlets and Ramadan evenings bring iftar laid across mats on the verandah, with dates, puffed rice known as muri, fried onion pakoras, chana masala and syrup soaked jalebi. Tarawih continues late into the night, and qiyam fills the final ten. Eid mornings draw families in freshly pressed panjabis and saris, and children receive sweet shemai vermicelli from the kitchens. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes on the low shelves and accept the warm cup of sugary tea offered by the committee. Nearby lie the old port of Chittagong, the shrine of Bayazid Bostami, the Foy's Lake recreation grounds and the forested hills of the Chittagong range. A well in the courtyard, dug deep into the Fatikchari limestone, still produces clear cool water used for wudu and for the post Eid tea shared with arriving relatives, and the caretaker mentions proudly that the well has never run dry even during the driest stretches of the Bengal summer in living memory.
