Surau Sulaiman Kampung Tarom is located in Kampung Tarom, within Johor Bahru, Malaysia, named in honour of Sulaiman — Prophet Sulayman, peace be upon him, the king and prophet whom Allah endowed with wisdom, dominion over the jinn, and the ability to understand the speech of animals. Naming a surau after this noble prophet connects the building to the long Islamic tradition of revering the prophets and the particular place of Sulayman in that tradition. The surau serves its immediate kariah in Kampung Tarom, a kampung whose name and character preserve a link to older, pre-urban patterns of Malay communal life even as the city has grown around it. The building is modest — a prayer hall, a women's section, wudu facilities, a verandah — maintained through the volunteer efforts of the community. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the kariah, and the Friday jumu'ah is held at one of the larger nearby mosques. Weekend Qur'an classes for children run in the afternoons, with volunteer teachers guiding students through the qaidah and the mushaf. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil and yasin gatherings mark the spiritual rhythm of the neighbourhood. Ramadan transforms the surau into the heart of nightly community life, with taraweeh every night, iftar organised on a family rota, bubur and sweet drinks laid out before Maghrib, and the particular spiritual focus of the final ten nights. Eid prayers draw the community's families in their new clothes, and the takbir rings from the loudspeaker from dawn. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم described the prophets as brothers in faith from a single father, each bringing the same essential message of monotheism appropriate to their time. A surau named after Sulayman quietly honours that chain of prophecy, and the worshippers who come here for daily prayer join their voices to the tradition of worship that stretches back through the prophets to the beginning of human history. During the annual kariah retreat, the older men tell the children the story of Prophet Sulayman's understanding of the speech of the ant as mentioned in Surah An-Naml, and the children never forget that every creature, even the smallest, has its own voice in the worship of Allah.
