Within the eastern Indonesian city of Kendari, capital of South East Sulawesi province, Masjid Abu Bakar at the Pusat Dakwah Wahdah Islamiyah serves as the central mosque of an important Indonesian educational organisation and honours the memory of Abu Bakr al Siddiq, may God be pleased with him, the closest companion of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and the first caliph of Islam. Abu Bakr is celebrated across Muslim history for his steadfast support of the Prophet during the persecutions at Makkah, for accompanying him on the hijra to Madinah, and for his principled leadership following the Prophet's passing when he successfully held the young Muslim community together through the challenging apostasy wars. Wahdah Islamiyah, whose name translates as Islamic unity, is an Indonesian organisation founded in Makassar in the late twentieth century that emphasises the study of Quran and Sunnah, charitable work, and educational programmes across Indonesia. Kendari itself lies on the shores of Kendari Bay in the archipelagic province of South East Sulawesi, a region of Muslim majority population whose cultural traditions draw on Bugis, Tolaki, and Makassar heritage. Architecturally the mosque reflects the contemporary Indonesian idiom, combining elements of the traditional Javanese joglo form with modern Islamic motifs, typically featuring a central dome, one or two minarets, a wide pillared prayer hall capable of welcoming large gatherings, and generous verandahs for overflow worshippers during busy times. The five daily prayers are observed, Jumu'ah fills the mosque to capacity with khutbahs in Indonesian often including Quranic citations in Arabic, and the blessed month of Ramadan brings nightly taraweeh, communal iftar featuring Indonesian specialties, and intensified Quranic study. The two Eid congregations are particularly joyful. The Pusat Dakwah operates schools, libraries, and charitable initiatives including water wells in drought affected areas, clothing distributions for the poor, and scholarships for promising students. Visitors to Kendari find the complex a welcoming focal point of Muslim community life in this remote and beautiful corner of Indonesia. Sulawesi breezes carry the call to prayer far across the bay where fishing boats pause mid voyage so that their crews may observe the appointed salah.
