Kuhusu

Standing in the oldest quarter of al Jerif on the eastern outskirts of Khartoum, Masjid al Hara al Ula al Ateeq belongs to one of the earliest neighbourhoods of the Sudanese capital along the eastern bank of the Blue Nile. Al Jerif and its neighbouring villages were settled long before the founding of modern Khartoum in 1821, and their palm groves, irrigated vegetable gardens, and donkey drawn water wheels once supplied much of the food consumed in the Ottoman Egyptian garrison town that grew at the confluence of the two Niles. The mosque name itself, meaning the First Quarter Old Mosque, testifies to its pioneering place in the life of the area. Sudan's Islamic heritage reaches back to the earliest centuries of the faith. Arab merchants and scholars crossed the Red Sea from the Hijaz into the Nubian kingdoms, and over time the peaceful conversion of the region was cemented by the arrival of teachers such as Ghulamallah ibn Ayd in the fourteenth century and the holy men whose khalwas and hujras filled the banks of the Nile with Qur'anic schools. Their graduates preserved the memory of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) through recitation, remembrance, and a quiet loyalty to his Companions (may God be pleased with them). The building reflects the modest Nilotic style of older Sudanese mosques. Thick mudbrick walls plastered in ochre, a flat roof supported by palm timbers, a short minaret rising just above the surrounding date palms, and a courtyard shaded by a spreading neem tree shelter worshippers through the intense Khartoum heat. Inside, reed mats cover the floor, a simple painted mihrab points north toward Makkah, and a wooden minbar carved in the traditional Omdurman workshops completes the sanctuary. You will find on this page reliable prayer times for al Hara al Ula al Ateeq Mosque in al Jerif, its address, a map, and practical notes prepared for neighbourhood residents, Sudanese travellers coming in from the countryside, and visitors exploring the cultural life of greater Khartoum. The capital is known worldwide for the meeting of the Blue Nile and White Nile at the Mogran promontory, and many worshippers at al Jerif walk along the riverbank after Maghrib, enjoying the breeze that cools the date groves as families share kerkade tea and sweet pastries filled with local honey.
