Within a tsunami recovery housing complex in the town of Kota Trieng of Aceh province, Indonesia, Mushalla Komplek Rumah Bantuan Tsunami Ladang Panah carries a name that reaches directly into one of the most heart rending chapters of recent Indonesian history. On 26 December 2004, the great Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami struck the coasts of Aceh with devastating force, killing more than one hundred and seventy thousand people in this single province and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. International donors, the Indonesian government, and Islamic charities from across the Muslim world pooled their resources to rebuild, constructing settlements of concrete block houses in which this mushalla was established as a neighbourhood prayer hall.
Aceh, the province on the far northern tip of Sumatra, has been known for centuries as the Verandah of Makkah because of its deep Islamic scholarship, its historic sultanate, and its production of ulama. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught that whoever endures patiently in the face of a trial will be raised in rank by God, and the people of Aceh have lived that teaching through cycles of conflict, colonial occupation, and natural disaster. The mushalla, a smaller prayer hall distinct from a fully congregational mosque, serves as a place for five daily prayers, Qur'anic memorisation classes, and community gatherings for tahlil and dhikr.
Architecturally the building is a modest concrete structure of the standardised aid era, with a tiled roof, painted walls, a small tower carrying loudspeakers for the adhan, and a verandah along the front for shoes. Inside, woven mats and carpets cover the floor, a simple mihrab points toward Makkah, and a few copies of the Qur'an line shelves by the door. Fans turn through the tropical afternoons, and louvred windows admit the sea breeze. Ramadan brings collective iftars of nasi gurih, dendeng, and sweet tea, while the two Eid prayers draw the whole complex out into a single joyful gathering. Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha are published on this page for every resident of the Ladang Panah complex and every traveller through Aceh.
