عن المكان
Tucked into the verdant outskirts of Kulim in Kedah, Masjid Abdul Rahman Putra of Kampung Keladi honours Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj, the father of Malaysian independence, whose vision of a harmonious multiethnic nation still shapes the kingdom's civic imagination. Kampung Keladi, whose name evokes the broad leaved taro plant that once thrived in the surrounding paddies, retains the rhythm of a traditional Malay village even as modern Kulim expands around it. Kedah itself is called the rice bowl of Malaysia, its flat alluvial plains feeding the peninsula and cradling some of the oldest Islamic communities in the archipelago, with evidence of Muslim settlement stretching back many centuries to the era when Arab and Indian traders plied the Strait of Malacca. The masjid's architecture blends northern Malay vernacular motifs with contemporary Islamic features, a pitched tiled roof with layered eaves, slender columns rising from a cool tiled floor, fretwork ventilation screens that capture the monsoon breezes, and a modest dome crowned by the crescent. Inside, patterned carpets direct worshippers toward the mihrab, while calligraphic panels inscribed with Qur'anic verses adorn the walls in the graceful jawi script still taught in Kedah's religious schools. Daily prayers bring farmers, schoolteachers, and small traders together, and the Jumu'ah khutbah, delivered in Bahasa Malaysia with Arabic recitation, addresses family values, agricultural charity, and responsibilities of neighbourliness. Ramadan sees the village hold bazaars selling bubur lambuk, nasi kerabu, karipap, and sweet kuih, with iftars shared on long mats spread across the masjid verandah. Eid mornings bring the takbir resounding from dawn, followed by open house hospitality at every home. Visitors travelling between Penang and the Thai border can reach Kampung Keladi easily from the Kulim interchange, and nearby attractions include the Kulim High Tech Park and the forested slopes of Gunung Jerai. Respectful dress and quiet demeanour ensure warm welcome from the villagers. The adhan carries across the paddies at dusk, reminding listeners that this corner of northern peninsular Malaysia remains rooted in the unhurried rhythms of farming life even as Kulim transforms around its edges under the pressures of regional industrial growth.
