Baitussolihin, which translates loosely from the Arabic as the house of the righteous, lends its name to a rural mosque in the village of Kertodeso Trukan Dasar within Mirit subdistrict of Kebumen regency in Central Java, lying a short distance from the old royal town of Kutoarjo. Central Java is the cradle of Javanese Islamic civilisation, the region of the Demak Sultanate whose first mosque at Demak is considered the earliest surviving Islamic religious building on the island, the region of the wali songo whose teaching circles at Kudus, Muria and elsewhere shaped the character of local piety and the region of the kraton traditions of Surakarta and Yogyakarta that wove the faith into gamelan performance, batik making and wayang puppetry. Kebumen itself is a coastal and mountainous regency along the south central coast of Java, its farmers cultivating rice, sugarcane and coconut palms and its fisherman launching small boats from the stone breakwaters of the Indian ocean shore. The Baitussolihin mosque follows the traditional Javanese style, combining a central prayer hall whose tiered pyramidal roof rises in three receding layers supported by four carved timber columns called soko guru, whitewashed walls pierced by latticed windows and a simple minaret rising above the compound. Inside, the carpet is laid in deep green, the mihrab is tiled in cream with cobalt calligraphy and the mimbar rises in three carved steps. Daily prayers are called from the pitched roof by a village muezzin whose voice carries across rice paddies, the Jumu'ah sermon is delivered in Javanese and Bahasa Indonesia and Ramadan evenings bring communal iftar of jenang, kolak, fresh coconut water and warm lentil soup prepared by rotating families. Eid mornings fill the courtyard with families in matching batik, children running between the banana trees. Visitors are welcomed with jamu tea, shoes are left on low wooden shelves and modest dress is expected. Nearby landmarks include the Jatijajar limestone caves, the Menganti beach with its lighthouse and the Petanahan royal tombs honouring the old Central Javanese princes buried beneath carved stone walls still visited by pilgrims who thread through the bamboo groves that shade the approach.
