Kuhusu

Carrying a name that honours the venerable al Azhar of Cairo, the Madrassa az Har Sharif Islamiyyah in the Magomeni neighbourhood of Dar es Salaam offers the young Muslims of this great Tanzanian port city a dignified introduction to the classical disciplines of the Islamic tradition. Dar es Salaam, whose Arabic name means the Abode of Peace, was founded in the nineteenth century by Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar as a coastal settlement sheltered by a natural harbour. The city grew quickly under German and then British administration into the commercial capital of mainland Tanzania, welcoming many generations of Muslim traders.

The coast of east Africa has been deeply connected with the Arabian peninsula since the earliest centuries of Islam. Swahili, a beautiful language combining Bantu grammar with a rich Arabic vocabulary, grew along these shores as seafaring families from Yemen, Oman, and the Hadhramaut married into coastal communities and passed their faith and trading networks to their descendants. The Azhari school of scholarship, rooted in Cairo and extended across Africa through generations of returning students, shapes the teaching style of many such madrassas, which pair Qur'anic memorisation with instruction in Arabic grammar, fiqh, and the seerah.

The Magomeni madrassa occupies a practical coastal building with a pitched tin roof, whitewashed walls that reflect the strong tropical sunlight, shaded verandas where students sit for afternoon lessons, and a modest prayer hall used for the daily salah and the weekly Friday congregation. The children study in the afternoons after their regular government school hours, learning to recite the Holy Qur'an with tajwid, to write the Arabic alphabet beautifully, and to love the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, through lessons on his noble life, his Companions, and the gentle beauty of his daily conduct.

Visitors and families will find on this page accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Magomeni madrassa, along with its address, a helpful location map, and practical notes that assist residents of Dar es Salaam, travellers arriving by ship at the great harbour, researchers of east African Islamic heritage, and parents seeking a warm and disciplined place in which their children may begin the lifelong journey of loving the Book of God in the Swahili coastal tradition.
