Kuhusu

On the eastern edge of Makassar, the vibrant port capital of South Sulawesi, an unusually named neighbourhood mosque, Al Nindya Praja Rindra Sujiwa Syahrul Putra 2, carries the full given name of a beloved son of the household that endowed its construction. The Buginese and Makassar communities of South Sulawesi have long cultivated the practice of charitable giving in the name of a loved one, especially a departed child, so that each prayer offered inside the hall becomes a continuing kindness in the parent's record. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, assured the believers that when a servant dies the deeds cease except three, among them an ongoing charity.

Makassar's Islamic story is vivid. The faith arrived in the early seventeenth century through the preaching of the saintly Dato Ri Bandang and his two companions from Minangkabau. Sultan Alauddin of the Gowa kingdom embraced Islam in 1605, and within a generation the entire South Sulawesi region followed, producing celebrated scholars such as Sheikh Yusuf al Makassari who travelled to Mecca, Yemen, and Cape Town, where his green domed shrine still stands as a memorial of his exile.

The mosque itself, raised in a residential subdivision, follows the warm Sulawesian coastal style. A pyramidal tiered roof of green metal tiles, perforated walls that let the sea breeze cool the interior, a single slender minaret, and a tiled wudu area shaded by coconut palms welcome worshippers throughout the day. Inside, soft green carpets cover the floor, calligraphic panels citing the Qur'anic virtue of patience hang beside the mihrab, and a modest bookshelf holds local editions of tafsir and fiqh manuals in Bahasa Indonesia.

Accurate daily prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the mosque appear on this page, together with the Makassar address, a map pin, and hospitable notes for visitors arriving from Losari Beach, Fort Rotterdam, or the ferry port to Selayar. During Ramadan neighbours share bowls of coto Makassar, pallu basa, sop konro, and sweet pisang ijo with every passing guest, and tarawih evenings fill the hall with children and elders together. Any traveller voyaging between the pinisi schooners of Paotere Harbour and the coral gardens of Bunaken is warmly invited to step inside, to kneel upon the green carpets among the generous Makassar families, and to say a quiet Fatiha for the young soul whose name now blesses the building, asking God to raise him in light among those gathered in the company of His mercy.
