Kuhusu

Enshrining the memory of Sidi Muhammad ibn Sulayman al Jazuli, one of the seven patron saints of Marrakesh, this mosque and associated zawiya within the red city's medina honour the author of Dala'il al Khayrat, one of the most beloved devotional compositions in the Muslim world. Al Jazuli, may God have mercy upon him, passed away in 1465 and was later reinterred in Marrakesh by the Saadian sultans who recognised his enduring spiritual influence across the Maghreb and West Africa. His Dala'il, a book of prayers upon the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, continues to be recited daily by millions from Senegal to Indonesia. Marrakesh's Islamic heritage is extraordinary, shaped by the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties whose Kutubiyya and Ben Youssef madrasa still anchor the medina, and by centuries of scholars, travellers and poets who gathered in its ribats and zawiyas. The Moroccan architectural tradition favours ochre tadelakt plaster on pise walls, horseshoe arches, cedar ceilings carved in intricate muqarnas, zellij tile panels in geometric patterns, square minarets crowned with glazed merlons, and courtyards with central fountains. The mosque runs its five daily prayers, a substantial Friday congregation, tarawih through Ramadan when the zawiya becomes a lantern lit shrine, Eid celebrations, and above all the regular recitation of the Dala'il al Khayrat in its two volumes divided over the days of the week. Pilgrims from across the Maghreb and West Africa visit throughout the year to pay respects at the saint's tomb and renew their connection to the Shadhili Jazuli spiritual lineage. Travellers wandering the medina between the Jemaa el Fna square, the Ben Youssef madrasa and the Almoravid qubba will find this shrine mosque an essential station in any thoughtful itinerary of Marrakesh's spiritual heritage, approached with modest dress and quiet reverence out of respect for local custom. During the summer moussem season the zawiya fills with pilgrims from the Souss, the Rif and distant Mauritania, their gathered voices rising in the Dala'il's rhythmic cadences while the evening prayers unite hearts across continents in remembrance of the beloved Prophet, linking Marrakesh to the farthest corners of West Africa.
