Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, hosts the great Jami al Shaikh Muhammad ibn Abd al Aziz ibn Sultan, a mosque bearing the noble name of a senior member of the Saudi royal family whose endowment has raised a large and elegant congregational hall for the faithful of the city. Riyadh itself began as a small oasis town in the heart of the Najd plateau at the northern edge of the Empty Quarter, rose to prominence in the eighteenth century under the first Saudi state, and during the twentieth century grew into the modern capital, home today to more than seven million inhabitants spread across its wide grid of districts.
The naming of mosques after members of the royal family, after respected elders, or after benefactors who have endowed the building as a waqf follows an unbroken tradition in the Muslim world stretching back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, when the noble companions, may God be pleased with them, generously endowed mosques, wells, and schools for the benefit of the community. The practice has shaped Muslim societies for more than fourteen centuries and continues to do so in the cities of the kingdom today.
Architecturally the prayer hall presents a large and refined example of the Najdi tradition, with walls of smooth cream plaster, a central dome finished in ornamental tile, and a tall slender minaret from which the adhan carries across the surrounding residential blocks. Carved wooden doors open into a wide carpeted hall supported by slender columns, and the mihrab is framed by calligraphic panels drawn from the Qur'an. Chandeliers of modern Islamic design hang above the rows.
Daily congregations gather office workers from the nearby business districts, civil servants from government offices, families from the surrounding villas, and travellers passing through the capital. Friday khutbahs are delivered in classical Arabic, often drawing on themes of gratitude for divine blessings, honesty in work, and the sincere example of the Prophet and his companions. Visitors to Riyadh exploring the National Museum, the Masmak fortress, the Kingdom Centre, or the old Diriyah quarter will discover in this endowed mosque a calm space for devotion during their time in the Najdi capital.
