Kuhusu

Carrying the name of the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahhab, may God have mercy upon him, this jami and masjid complex in Riyadh commemorates the eighteenth century reformer and scholar whose preaching from the Najdi town of Uyayna and later Diriyah inspired the movement that would give rise to the modern Saudi state. Ibn Abd al Wahhab composed the widely taught Kitab al Tawhid and authored numerous shorter treatises on creed, ethics and juridical method, and his partnership with Imam Muhammad ibn Saud established the political and religious settlement whose legacy continues to shape the kingdom. Riyadh's Islamic heritage reaches back long before the establishment of the Saudi realm, when the small settlement of Hajr and later the walled town of Riyadh served as an outpost on the caravan routes of central Arabia. The Najdi capital has since become one of the largest gatherings of Muslim metropolises in the world, marked by grand mosques, religious universities such as Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, and a dense network of neighbourhood prayer halls. The Najdi architectural tradition favours mud brick or rendered walls in pale tones, compact square plans, subtle triangular decorative openings known as ventilation triangles, plain wooden minbars, and discreet minarets often crowned with a simple cap. In contemporary urban form these motifs are rendered in reinforced concrete and stone, yet the palette and spatial discipline remain. Five daily prayers gather crowds of residents, workers and visitors, Friday prayers fill the enormous hall with rows stretching to the perimeter, tarawih nights in Ramadan extend late past midnight, and Eid mornings draw families arriving in freshly pressed thawbs and abayas. Qur'an and creed classes are held on weekdays, and the mosque library lends works by the eponymous imam and his students. Travellers visiting the restored Diriyah historic district, the Masmak Fortress or Kingdom Tower will recognise here a living memorial to Najdi religious thought. A monthly open lecture series addresses contemporary juridical questions arising from modern finance, medicine and family life, drawing specialists from the ministry of religious affairs and prominent academic researchers who engage an audience of students, businesspeople and curious general public alike.
