Grand Mosque Almhd Alaly Llqdaʾ

Serving the Higher Judicial Institute of the Yemeni Republic in the capital city of Sanaa, Jami al Ma'had al Ali li l Qada offers prayer space for the judges, lecturers, and students preparing to administer Islamic law across the provinces of the Republic of Yemen. Sanaa, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, stretches across a high mountain plateau at more than two thousand two hundred metres above sea level. Yemen was among the earliest lands to embrace Islam, and a delegation from the tribes of Yemen travelled to Medina during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, to declare their faith and to request teachers of the Qur'an and fiqh. The Prophet praised the people of Yemen for their softness of heart and gentleness of manner, and the famous saying al iman yamaniyun, faith is Yemeni, has comforted generations of Yemeni believers through seasons of hardship.

The Higher Judicial Institute itself prepares qadis, judges, to serve in the courts of the Republic, teaching classical fiqh alongside modern legal subjects. Every judge carries a heavy trust, for the Prophet taught that of three judges only one enters paradise, namely the one who knows the truth and rules according to it. Naming the institute's mosque as Jami al Ma'had al Ali li l Qada expresses the sober prayer that every graduate will enter that blessed station through knowledge, integrity, and humble dependence on divine guidance.

Architecturally, the mosque reflects the classical Sanaa style. Walls of brown basalt and red brick, friezes of white gypsum, a central dome, a tall minaret visible across the walled old city, carved wooden doors opening onto a courtyard planted with qat and flowering almond, and a carpeted prayer hall with a calligraphic mihrab welcome worshippers for the five daily prayers.
