Kuhusu

Coupling devotion to Imam Husayn, peace be upon him, with the cultural centre bearing the name of his young son Ali Akbar, peace be upon him, both martyrs of the plains of Karbala, this jami mosque in the town of Shazand serves as both a place of daily prayer and a hub of educational programming. The grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and the young Ali Akbar whose courage at Karbala is remembered each year in the month of Muharram, occupy a central place in the devotional imagination of central Iran, where the rituals of azadari, lamentation, and the qira'at of maqtals are deeply cherished. Shazand lies in Markazi province in central Iran, near the industrial city of Arak, and its rural hinterland produces wheat, sugar beets and grapes whose cultivation has sustained the town for centuries. Iran's Muslim heritage ranks among the most layered in the world, anchored in Qom, Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz and Nishapur, and enlivened by scholars, poets and scientists such as Avicenna, al Ghazali, Hafez, al Farabi and Suhrawardi, may God have mercy upon them. The regional architectural tradition of central Iran favours brick construction finished with blue and turquoise glazed tiling, iwans giving onto courts with central pools, muqarnas vaulting above entrances, twin minarets framing the qibla wall, and tile calligraphy in nastaliq. Five The daily prayers draw residents from the surrounding streets, Friday assemblies draw worshippers from the town and adjacent villages, tarawih and mustahabb gatherings through Ramadan are accompanied by readings from the munajat of Imam Ali and the sahifa sajjadiyyah, and the nights of Muharram see fervent majlis delivered by visiting khatibs. Qur'an and nahj al balagha classes meet in the afternoons, and the cultural centre organises programmes for youth including calligraphy and Persian literature. Travellers journeying through Arak toward the shrine city of Qom will find in this mosque an intimate expression of central Iranian devotional life. A specialised ashura archive preserves recordings of noha chanting and rowdeh recitations by celebrated Iranian reciters over the past century, and families with young children often visit the mosque library to listen together as part of the month of mourning each year.
