Preserving the memory of Khwaja Arif ar Revgari, one of the revered spiritual ancestors of the Naqshbandi silsilah, this cathedral masjid of Mahitaban in Shofirkon near Bukhara anchors a region of Uzbekistan whose Islamic heritage runs deeper than almost any other part of the Muslim world. Bukhara itself earned the epithet Bukhara al Sharif, meaning Bukhara the noble, and for centuries was known across the ummah as a dome of Islam, its madrasas producing generations of scholars whose works defined the sciences of hadith, jurisprudence, tafsir, and the spiritual paths. Khwaja Arif ar Revgari, may God sanctify his secret, occupies an honoured place in the Khwajagan line that culminated in Bahauddin Naqshband, may God be pleased with him, whose shrine just outside Bukhara draws continuous streams of pilgrims. Shofirkon lies within the Bukhara oasis, surrounded by irrigation channels, mulberry groves, and cotton fields, and the cathedral masjid of Mahitaban stands as its principal congregational edifice. Architecturally the structure expresses the classical Central Asian idiom, a central dome glazed in turquoise tiles rising above a cubic prayer hall, a tall portal or pishtaq framing the entrance with intricate tilework in geometric and floral patterns, tapered minarets crowned with small lantern finials, and an arcaded courtyard providing shade against the fierce Transoxianan summer. Inside, painted wooden ceilings featuring kundal gilding illuminate the prayer hall, ganch plasterwork carved into delicate muqarnas frames the mihrab, and carpets from the surrounding villages figure the floor with rich crimson and indigo patterns. Daily prayers follow the Muftiyat rota, and the Jumu'ah sermon is spoken in Uzbek alongside Qur'an recited in Arabic while Ramadan sees the community break their fast with samsa, plov and shurpa, and the round Bukharan non breads. Tarawih prayers flow through the warm nights, and Eid brings families in colourful chapan coats to the courtyard. Visitors travelling between Bukhara's Kalyan Mosque, the Poi Kalyan complex, the Samanid mausoleum, and the shrine of Bahauddin Naqshband will find Shofirkon a worthwhile detour into the enduring spiritual geography of the Bukhara oasis. The masjid thus remains a quiet yet significant node in the sacred geography of the Bukhara region, its activities continuing the unbroken transmission of the Khwajagan spiritual heritage whose influence has touched Central Asia, the subcontinent, Turkey, and the broader Muslim world across many long and remarkable centuries.
