About

Serving the multicultural suburbs of South Brisbane along the winding Brisbane River in Queensland, Australia, the Islamic Centre and West End Mosque welcomes worshippers from every corner of the globe into one of the oldest established Muslim communities of the Pacific state. Queensland's first Muslim arrivals were cameleers brought from the Afghan frontier and the Baluch coast in the nineteenth century, opening trade routes into the outback that trains and motor lorries had not yet conquered. Later waves of migration from Turkey, Bosnia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Lebanon, Somalia, and Iraq deepened Brisbane's Muslim life, giving rise to mosques across the metropolitan area.

The West End neighbourhood, facing the central business district across the river, has long been known for its diversity, its weekend markets, its cafes, and its embrace of many cultures, making it a natural home for a mosque that welcomes believers of every background. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, declared in his farewell sermon that no Arab has superiority over a non Arab, nor a white over a black, except by piety and righteous action, and centres such as this one seek to embody that principle in daily practice beside the calm waters of the Brisbane.

Architecturally the mosque blends Queenslander verandah traditions with subtle Islamic motifs. A timber framed building with wide shaded porches, a small dome above the prayer hall, a modest minaret, and louvred windows encourages cross ventilation during the warm subtropical summer. Inside, soft carpets cover the floor, a simple mihrab faces north west toward Mecca, and a community hall hosts classes in Qur'anic studies, Arabic, and English as a second language for new arrivals.

Accurate daily prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the West End Mosque appear on this page along with the South Brisbane address, a map pin, and hospitable notes for visitors arriving from the city centre, South Bank parklands, or the university precinct at St Lucia. During Ramadan the congregation hosts nightly iftars featuring dishes from every represented culture, with biryani, kebabs, nasi goreng, sambusa, sambousek, and sweet baklava appearing on shared tables. Any traveller journeying between the Gold Coast beaches and the Sunshine Coast hinterland is warmly invited to step within, to kneel upon the woollen carpets among the wonderfully diverse congregation of West End, and to whisper a soft supplication of gratitude for the old cameleers whose patient trails across red dunes first carried the adhan into the wide, silent, and hauntingly beautiful inland landscapes of this youngest continent on earth.
