Kuhusu

Based in the village of Tempursari in Tambakboyo, part of Mantingan district on the border between Central Java and Ngawi regency in East Java, Masjid Jami Tempursari serves a rural community whose livelihood has long depended on rice paddies, teak forests, and the small workshops that dot the lanes of surrounding hamlets. Mantingan itself is historically celebrated for Masjid Mantingan, a sixteenth century mosque linked to the Demak sultanate that brought Islam across Java, and the smaller masjids of the surrounding villages carry forward that inheritance in humble but determined form throughout every generation of the region.

A masjid jami in Indonesian usage is a congregational mosque in which the Friday prayer is performed, and taking this title places Tempursari's mosque within the core of local religious life. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, made Jumu'ah the weekly gathering for men of every Muslim community, and the Companions, may God be pleased with them, travelled considerable distances to attend it faithfully. Every village masjid jami in Java, including this one, preserves that ancient practice in a setting of palm trees, rice fields, and the gentle hum of insects across the rural plains.

Architecturally, the building follows the Javanese tradition. A tiered tiled roof, rising in two or three stages, shelters a square prayer hall built of timber, brick, and plaster. Louvred windows, wide eaves, and ceiling fans keep the interior cool during the humid afternoons, and the mihrab is faced with decorative ceramic tiles of green and white. A raised area at the rear, screened by carved wood, accommodates the women of the village for Jumu'ah and taraweeh, and a small madrasa wing hosts children learning to recite the Qur'an after Asr.

Farmers, teachers, small traders, and the elderly gather here steadily throughout the day for the five prayers, and on Fridays the hall fills with workers returning from distant paddies. During Ramadan the taraweeh prayers and community iftars become the focal point of village life. On this page travellers passing through Mantingan will find the current prayer times, address, and helpful notes for every pilgrim, student, or neighbour wishing to locate Masjid Jami Tempursari and share in its unhurried rural Javanese devotion throughout every season of the Indonesian farming year.
