عن المكان
The mosque known locally as the Masjid of the Five of the Cloak, attached to the Noan kitchen cabinet workshop in Tehran, bears a composite name that reflects the layered commercial and devotional geography of the Iranian capital. Tehran's bazaars and industrial quarters are studded with neighbourhood mosques where workers, shopkeepers, and craftsmen gather for salah between their labours, and the name Khamis Al Aba, meaning the five of the cloak, refers to a revered formulation from Islamic tradition honouring the five noble figures gathered beneath a Yemeni cloak by the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. These five are the Prophet himself, his daughter Fatima, his son in law and cousin Ali, and his grandsons al Hasan and al Husayn, may God be pleased with them all, and they are known collectively as the Ahl al Kisa, the people of the cloak, in a famous narration found in the authoritative collections of the traditions of the Prophet. The mosque is a modest urban masjid within a Tehrani commercial block, sharing its frontage with small workshops producing kitchen cabinets and furniture. The prayer hall is floored in deep red Persian carpet, with a mihrab faced in tilework of turquoise and gold, and a minbar of carved wood. Framed calligraphy on the walls carries the names of the five of the cloak in gold against black, alongside verses from Surah al Ahzab. The congregation is drawn from the workers and owners of the surrounding workshops, shopkeepers of the bazaar, and residents of the nearby apartment blocks. Daily prayers follow the measured Iranian cadence, and on Thursday evenings a small dua kumayl gathering is held in the hall, with recitation of the celebrated supplication and blessings upon the Prophet and his noble family. Ramadan fills the mosque nightly with tarawih, iftar tables of ash reshteh soup, zereshk polo, and dates, and late night Quran reading. The mosque sits within a short taxi ride of the Grand Bazaar, the Golestan Palace, the National Jewellery Museum near Ferdowsi Square, the Tehran carpet museum, and the mighty Milad Tower that dominates the western skyline of the Iranian capital.
