Operating as the scholarly zawiya of Sidi Yahya ibn al Safiyya in Tiouli within the Oriental region of eastern Morocco, this institution serves a rural community in a landscape shaped by pastoral tradition, mountain geography, and the enduring prestige of Moroccan spiritual orders. The Oriental region stretches from the Mediterranean coast near Saidia and Nador inland to the high plateau, encompassing Berber speaking and Arabic speaking populations whose ancestors have tended sheep, cultivated cereals, and preserved religious learning across many generations. Moroccan zawiya architecture draws on Andalusian, Saadian, and Alaouite inheritance, featuring whitewashed walls, horseshoe arches, glazed zellij tile dadoes in greens and blues, carved cedar ceilings and screens, and square minarets topped by small domes and crescents. The scholarly zawiya differs from the purely devotional retreat in its emphasis on the transmission of religious knowledge alongside spiritual formation, with classrooms accommodating students at various levels and libraries housing classical texts. This zawiya of Sidi Yahya follows regional character, its walled compound enclosing a courtyard, a mosque, teaching rooms, lodgings for students and visiting travellers, and perhaps a marabout housing the resting place of the saintly founder. Inside, the carpeted prayer hall features a traditional Moroccan mihrab, a cedar minbar, and calligraphic decoration in the elegant Maghrebi script. Daily prayers gather residents and students, and Jumu'ah fills the hall with a wider congregation from the surrounding countryside. Sermons in Moroccan Arabic with classical Qur'anic passages address religious themes and reflect on the teachings associated with the saintly lineage. Ramadan transforms the zawiya calendar with communal iftar gatherings featuring Moroccan specialities including harira, chebakia, tagines, couscous, and sweet mint tea. Taraweeh prayers fill the evenings. The zawiya runs religious education, Qur'anic memorisation, and advanced studies in classical subjects. Annual pilgrimage gatherings draw visitors from across the region to honour the founder's memory and renew their spiritual commitments. Women participate in dedicated programmes. Nearby attractions include the Mediterranean coastal resorts of Saidia, the Beni Snassen mountains with their caves and landscapes, the historic city of Oujda near the Algerian border, and the agricultural villages of the high plateau.
