Serving the historic trading town of Wajir in the arid northeastern region of Kenya, Masjid al Nur, known locally as Wajir Old Mosque, is one of the oldest houses of prayer in the district and has welcomed travellers, traders, and pastoralists for many generations. Wajir lies in the vast semi arid plains of the Horn of Africa, a crossroads of Somali, Borana, and Orma Muslim communities whose livelihoods rest on camel, cattle, and goat herding, supported by a network of wells whose water has drawn caravans together since ancient times. The town grew around these wells and around the mosques where travellers paused to perform wudu, pray, and rest in the shade before continuing into the scrub.
The name al Nur, meaning Light, is one of the most beautiful words of the Qur'an, featured in the celebrated Verse of Light that compares the guidance of God to a lamp set within a niche. Calling a desert mosque al Nur invites every worshipper to see the mosque itself as a lamp whose light, both literal and spiritual, draws weary travellers across the open plain. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught his Companions, may God be pleased with them, that God is the Light of the heavens and the earth, and that prayer is the light of the believer in this life and the next.
Architecturally, the mosque reflects the Swahili and Somali influenced tradition of East African masjids. Whitewashed walls, a modest minaret whose loudspeaker carries the adhan across the plain, arched windows, and a carpeted prayer hall with a plain mihrab facing the qiblah form a practical arrangement suited to the heat. A small courtyard with a well offers space for ablution, and women pray in a separate area at the rear.
Herders, traders, teachers, and travellers along the roads between Garissa, Mandera, and southern Somalia gather here for the five daily prayers, for Jumu'ah, and for taraweeh during Ramadan, when the community shares iftar meals of camel milk, dates, rice, and goat meat. On this page visitors travelling across northeastern Kenya will find the current prayer times, address, and helpful notes to enable every pilgrim, aid worker, student of Swahili and Somali heritage, or passing traveller to locate the venerable Wajir Old Mosque and share in its generous, welcoming, and deeply rooted congregational life under the hot African sky all year round.
