Tentang
UIN Sunan Kalijaga, the Islamic State University of Yogyakarta named after one of the nine wali who carried the faith to Java, maintains on its campus this masjid called Laboratorium Agama, literally the religion laboratory, a building whose unusual Indonesian name reflects its dual function as a place of worship and as a teaching facility for students preparing to become imams, teachers and scholars. UIN Sunan Kalijaga is among the oldest Islamic universities in Indonesia, tracing its foundation to nineteen fifty and offering degrees in theology, Arabic, Qur'anic studies, Islamic law, Islamic education and the humanities. Sunan Kalijaga himself was a saintly figure famous for his creative use of gamelan music, wayang puppetry and Javanese poetry to communicate Qur'anic teachings across the island in the sixteenth century. Yogyakarta, the sultanate city whose court still preserves the Javanese classical arts, has been a centre of religious scholarship for more than four centuries. Architecturally the Laboratorium Agama masjid combines a contemporary Indonesian campus style with references to traditional Javanese mosques, featuring a square prayer hall topped by a multi tiered pyramid roof rather than a dome, a single minaret finished in cream and arcades of pointed arches. Inside, ceiling fans turn above a green carpet, the mihrab is tiled in cobalt and white, and the mimbar is carved from jati wood. The hall accommodates more than a thousand worshippers, with a separate women's section and generous space for students studying between prayer times. Daily prayers are called by rotating student muezzins, Jumu'ah khutbah is delivered in Bahasa Indonesia with Arabic passages and often addresses contemporary intellectual issues facing Muslim students, and Ramadan evenings bring communal iftar, tadarrus and tarawih. Eid mornings fill the forecourt with students and staff families. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes on low racks and respect the academic quiet around study circles. Nearby lie the Sultan's Palace of Yogyakarta, the Water Castle of Taman Sari, the Malioboro shopping street and the ancient Buddhist temple of Borobudur, together offering a remarkable window onto Javanese civic learning. A small bookshop within the campus mosque complex sells classical Arabic grammar texts, tafsir editions, biographies of the wali songo and translations of the works of Mawlana Jalal ad Din Rumi, offering students an affordable route into their scholarly inheritance as they prepare to serve communities across the archipelago.
