Kuhusu

Serving as a place of renewal in the Catalan industrial city of Santa Coloma de Gramenet just north of Barcelona, the Comunidad Islámica Tajdid takes its Arabic name from the concept of renewal in faith and practice that classical scholarship has prized across the centuries. The city grew rapidly during the twentieth century as migrants from southern Spain and later from Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, and elsewhere settled in its dense apartment blocks along the Besos river. Santa Coloma's Muslim population includes a strong North African component whose family memories reach back to cities such as Tangier, Nador, Tetouan, and Fez, as well as South Asian and West African communities that bring their own traditions and tongues. The mosque itself occupies an adapted commercial premises, as is common across much of urban Europe, with interior modifications that create a clean carpeted prayer hall, a simple mihrab, a wooden minbar, and a women's section. The practical architecture reflects the realities of urban Catalan life rather than the grand monuments of the Maghreb, but the atmosphere inside during prayer rivals any historic setting. Five daily prayers gather worshippers who slip away from work, school, or home for the brief moments of congregational worship, and Jumu'ah fills the building to capacity. Khutbahs are typically delivered in classical Arabic with reflections in Spanish, Catalan, or Darija depending on the audience. Ramadan transforms the community calendar with iftar meals shared most evenings, often funded by rotating families or by collections taken among the congregation. Taraweeh prayers draw large numbers, and qiyam during the final ten nights extends into the night. Weekend classes teach children Qur'anic recitation, Arabic language, and Islamic values that complement their Catalan and Spanish schooling. Adult education addresses questions of fiqh and family life. Women participate in dedicated prayer spaces and sisters circles. Nearby attractions include the Barcelona metropolitan region, the Collserola natural park, the Sagrada Familia basilica, and the working class neighbourhoods whose mixed heritage gives Santa Coloma its distinctive character. Working class solidarity has long shaped civic life in Santa Coloma, and this mosque contributes to that tradition by welcoming newcomers and supporting families through the practical challenges of settling into Catalan society.
