Kuhusu

Comunitat Islamica La Pau serves the Muslim residents of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a dense working neighbourhood that climbs the slopes above the Besos river just north of Barcelona. Catalonia's Islamic story stretches from the medieval centuries of al Andalus to the recent decades of migration from Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, and Gambia, and the congregation of La Pau reflects that contemporary diversity. The name La Pau, Catalan for The Peace, is both the name of the neighbourhood and an aspiration for the community itself: the word Islam shares its root with salam, peace, and the association chose the name to express that connection. The premises occupy a converted ground floor in a typical Catalan apartment block, with a large carpeted prayer hall, a small women's section upstairs reached by a narrow staircase, and an entrance lobby where shoes are arranged in numbered pigeonholes for each worshipper. The mihrab is a simple niche framed in green tile, and a handwritten sign by the door reminds visitors to silence their phones during salah. The congregation holds five daily prayers, with Jumu'ah drawing worshippers from Santa Coloma, neighbouring Badalona, and the upper quarters of Nou Barris across the district boundary. Sermons are delivered in Arabic with a Spanish summary to ensure newer generations born in Catalonia can follow, and they frequently touch on neighbourhood ethics, good citizenship, and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. During Ramadan, the community organises nightly tarawih and shared iftars with dates, harira soup, and Catalan bread. Eid prayers move to a rented sports hall to accommodate the hundreds of families who attend, filling the space with the sound of takbir in several languages. The association also runs children's Arabic classes on Saturdays, a small food bank that distributes to Muslim and non Muslim neighbours alike, and regular sessions for new Muslims. Santa Coloma itself is served by the Barcelona metro on line nine, connecting visitors easily to the Sagrada Familia, the Gothic quarter, the Boqueria market along the Ramblas, and the old harbour at Port Vell.
